The seven questions that reveal real expertise

Ask these in the first call. The answers — especially how confidently and specifically they're given — separate operators from order-takers.

  1. "Show me a SERP analysis you've done for an Egyptian client." If they can't produce one within minutes, SERP analysis isn't actually part of their process. This is the single most diagnostic question on the list.
  2. "How do you handle Arabic keyword research differently from English?" A real answer mentions dialect, intent shifts, lower tool coverage, and the need for manual SERP review. A weak answer is "we use the same tools".
  3. "What does your first 30 days look like for a new client?" The right answer is heavy on diagnosis, light on execution. Anyone promising "we'll start publishing in week one" hasn't actually understood the site yet.

  5. "How will you report progress in months 1, 3, and 6?" Good answers name indexed pages, organic clicks, lead-quality changes. Weak answers name impressions and "keyword movements".
  6. "What's a recent project you'd consider a failure, and what did you learn?" Anyone who says they don't have one is either lying or hasn't done enough work to fail.
  7. "When would you tell a client SEO isn't right for them?" The honest answer exists — early-stage product, unstable offer, no lead capacity. Anyone who says "SEO is right for everyone" is selling, not consulting.

Red flags that should end the conversation

Some signals don't require interpretation. If you see any of these, walk.

Guaranteed #1 rankings

Nobody — anywhere — can guarantee Google rankings. This is the SEO equivalent of a stock tip that "can't fail". Always a scam or a misunderstanding.

Fixed monthly packages with no diagnostic step

"Silver / Gold / Platinum" tiers reveal that the agency sells units of work, not outcomes. Your site's actual problems are irrelevant to what you'll get.

Refusal to name current clients

Some confidentiality is normal. Total opacity is not. If they can't name one live client whose ranking you can verify yourself, the case studies probably don't exist.

Reports full of impressions and 'keyword movements' only

Impressions can rise while leads fall — and frequently do. A serious agency reports on indexed pages, organic clicks, and downstream business outcomes.

Pressure to sign within the same week
